This month we are going to discuss the topic of renovating an old home. Although this can be a very rewarding project to take on, you will also need to be prepared for the challenges you will encounter when tackling an older property. For example, many building materials we now know to be hazardous were commonly used in houses years ago. If you discover them during your renovation, the cost to remove them could blow your budget. Here are some of those materials:

Lead paint. If the house is more than 40 years old and has not been renovated since you may well discover lead paint. It becomes a hazard when it begins to deteriorate, causing it to chip or turn into dust. Young children and babies are most at risk of lead paint exposure.
Asbestos is another problem you could find. During the 1930s to 1950s asbestos insulation was frequently used. If you discover it during your renovation, you will need to hire someone experienced in asbestos removal to get rid of it.
Radon gas is often found in high levels in older properties. You will not be able to see or smell it, but it is harmful to your health. A simple test will help to determine the level of radon in your house.
Aluminum wiring. In the 1960s and 70s, aluminum wiring was used instead of copper. Over time this wiring becomes faulty, so if you have it in your house, you will need to replace it.
From this short review, it is clear to see that you should be prepared for what you might find during this type of renovation. Make sure you allow for this when planning your budget.
